Introducing Ourselves

This first year as Legasea Marine has really flown by, and what a blast we’ve had! While finding our footing as new business owners, we made a commitment to constantly observe and orient around day-to-day operations. We strived to provide great value to our customers and are excited about continuing to build long-term relationships with you, as well as our team of talented employees.
Luckily, our long-standing reputation as a premier yacht sales, service and marina enterprise that we vowed to build upon, allowed us to do just that! From Day 1, we ardently mapped out our long-term vision for the marina, as well as short-term improvements that would be readily welcomed. Fundamental to us were tools to help us communicate with our customers, so we invested immediately in a highly informative website and robust social media accounts. These became our main communication platforms, as we build brand awareness and inform regional boaters of the many benefits and services we provide. We’re proud of our catchy logo, too!

Making Boating Better Every Day

It didn’t take long to realize that several improvements could be made to enhance the security, safety, and overall physical appearance of the marina. In case you are new to our Legasea Family or have not stopped in over the past year, following are some of the updates we were delighted to make in our first twelve months:

  • Upgraded bathrooms
  • Fresh paint in many areas including interior and exterior doors, picnic tables, pedestals and fencing
  • Improved lighting for the service shop and marina perimeter
  • New state-of-the art security cameras
  • New physical security system to help protect our personnel and customers
  • All new signage
  • Major electrical updates with more phases to come
  • Renovated sales offices in the administrative building with the plan to create four additional offices
  • Advanced from manual timeclock for team members to a mobile time-keeping system
  • Improved our facility lighting to accommodate our operations and respect our neighbors
  • Brokerage boat and entrance area redesigned, and new gravel added for a more welcoming entrance
  • Many plants carefully selected and planted by our own team members
  • Our redesigned 40’ x 40’ deck with new Adirondack chairs and tables
Legasea Marine Friday Nights on The Landing party
The Landing at Legasea Marine has become a hub for gatherings and customer appreciation events. We have thoroughly enjoyed hosting Friday Nights on The Landing with live music and tasty bites. We are grateful for so much positive feedback around the sense of community that continues to grow with the improvements and events at Legasea Marine.

Perhaps one of our biggest additions has been The Ship’s Shack at the end of the main dock and fueling station. Customers no longer need to walk the lengthy pier to the main Ship’s Store for on-the-fly needs. Instead, a variety of sundries are now available for customers to grab on the go!

Another big achievement for our first year in business is our designation as the new Contender dealership for Virginia and Dare County, North Carolina. We continue to grow the presence and sales of our premier boat brands, including Albemarle and Parker. Plus, our highly trained service technicians are adeptly managing maintenance, repair and warranty claims on all major outboard brands!

The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts

Establishing our company’s core values has been foundational to forming the pillars for our company and employee growth. Helping each team member understand how they contribute to the mission and vision of Legasea Marine has been key to getting us all “rowing in the same direction.”

Early on, we recognized the need for additional leadership positions and hired more full-time staff to better manage the array of responsibilities as well as cross-train employees. Where we saw great potential in existing team members, we readily promoted them to new roles.

We have weekly team syncs to hold each other accountable and generate transparency across each of the business units. During these meetings, we also like to recognize and celebrate our staff with monthly birthday luncheons.

Legasea Marine is also very proud of our business partners: Towne Bank, Christi Insurance, Bishop Fishing Supply, and Sea Tow, who kindly sponsored our newly designed team shirts which have helped to increase safety and awareness of our staff throughout the marina property.

Connecting with our Community

Not only do we interact with our customers and vendors on site, but we also make it a priority to integrate with our partners and the community outside of the marina. In December 2022, we joined our neighbors in celebrating the holidays with our lighted Parker boat in the Poquoson Christmas Parade.

In February 2023, Legasea Marine made its grand debut at the Mid-Atlantic Sports and Boat Show in Virginia Beach. We also sponsored the Virginia Beach Tuna Tournament, Pirates Cove Billfish Tournament and the Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament. Also on the fishing front, Legasea Marine gladly gave rise to a permanent weigh station to better serve The Cobia East Coast Championship, where we witnessed the champion weigh-in of an impressive 87.3 lb fish! And, we informed our customers at large of our partnerships with Yamaha, Suzuki and Mercury through our ad investments in Fish Talk, Prop Talk, and Spin Sheet magazines. Back in the community, we sponsored a Sleepy Hole Golf Course map, and took great joy in supporting our local York County Little League All-Star Team as they traveled to, and inevitably won, the state tournament!
As Legasea Marine’s owners are always first to support team members and their ambitions, we proudly sponsored Nick Smith’s Late Model Stock Car, Mackenzie Holloway’s Kart racing, and we have sponsored the Hampton Roads Academy’s golf tournament (and Jennifer’s high school alma mater!) Our latest community participation is at October’s ever-popular Poquoson Seafood Festival.

Room to Grow

We are beyond delighted to have been able to cover so much ground in year one. However, we have our sights set on some even larger improvements over the next 1 to 5 years. Most notably, what we are calling Phase 1 of our Marina Expansion Plan. This includes 9 new boat lifts, increased floating docks around the fueling area, a living shoreline, and a harbormaster station.

Phase 2 consists of a new bathhouse, swimming pool and tiki bar. We have met consistently with officials from York County, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC), the Chesapeake Bay Board and the Wetlands Board in hopes of receiving the necessary approvals and permits so work may begin.

We are currently in the process of creating a new customer service space and a new entryway for our vendors, while developing plans to refurbish our main ship’s store and parts counter. Further improvements in Phase 2 include exterior painting of our two large buildings and repaving and improving the parking lot. Given the scope of some of the planned efforts to sustainably enhance our portion of this watershed, the Legasea Marine team is looking at local, state and federal grants to utilize their many tools and funding to ensure things are done ideally.

More than anything, we value the feedback of our customers. The team and owners have listened and continue to act on customer recommendations and considerations. We always welcome customer suggestions and look forward to your important role in continuing to help shape the future of Legasea Marine.

In closing, we are grateful to our customers, employees, partners and communities for the role they have played in this exciting year. This coming year will certainly see even more new initiatives by our company and team. So, stay tuned!
